Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) is responsible for providing quality education opportunities to Indian students. It currently oversees 185 schools, serving about 41,000 students on or near Indian reservations. Poor student outcomes raise questions about how well BIE is achieving its mission. This book discusses Indian Affairs’ management challenges in improving Indian education, including its administration of schools; staff capacity to address schools’ needs; and accountability for managing school construction and monitoring school spending. Furthermore, the book reviews the extent to which Indian Affairs has information on the safety and health conditions at BIE school facilities and supported schools in addressing any safety and health deficiencies at school facilities.
