内容简介

This book explores the numerical algorithms underpinning modern finite element based computational mechanics software. It covers all the major numerical methods that are used in computational mechanics. It reviews the basic concepts in linear algebra and advanced matrix theory, before covering solution of systems of equations, symmetric eigenvalue solution methods, and direct integration of discrete dynamic equations of motion, illustrated with numerical examples. This book suits a graduate course in mechanics based disciplines, and will help software developers in computational mechanics. Increased understanding of the underlying numerical methods will also help practicing engineers to use the computational mechanics software more effectively.

This book contains the content needed to begin one's journey learning computational mechanics. Some examples with code would have been a great addition.

I took the class of authors' advanced computational mechanics course offered in UIUC in 1990s. This book is published based on the lecture notes of the class which was very popular course for CE, ME and AE graduate students. This book is unique in explaining many practical algorithms widely used for the nonlinear finite element analysis for the stability of the solution and enhancing the computational speed. The algorithms and methods explained in this book are offered only in the advanced finite element analysis classes in graduate school level, but practical since the authors are great FEA developers in many practical engineering projects. Highly recommend to engineers and students using advanced FEA tools and software developers.

Reading the Preface alone has been an enlightening experience. The eigenvalue solution methods are cleverly explained and illustrated, and there is a strong emphasis on the connection of numerical analysis with mechanics throughout the book. The direct integration of dynamic equations of motion exposes the genius level thinking behind Newmark's family of methods and others. Both authors are masters of mechanics, applied math, and finite element programming and analysis. This book certainly represents the high caliber of intellectual discourse and teaching at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

If you are going to be studying in advanced structural engineering with computational mechanics, I would recommend picking up this book. This book would be an excellent textbook to an advanced learner in linear and nonlinear mechanics and its application that it is easy to follow. I bought this book while i was taking a class and it was an excellent class reference while dealing with fundamental mechanics, and it certainly gave a good idea of the concepts.
