In the early records of the Colony he is sometimes referred to as Jacob J anse van Schermer hooren. In a State document of Holland published at The Hague in relating to Governor Stuyvesant's conduct in the at? Airs of the Colony, Schermerhooren is referred to as Jacob J anse van Scher merhooren, formerly a citizen of Waterland, Holland. This locality included the village of Schermerhorn, and the areas formerly covered by De Scher Mer, De Wur Mer, De Pur Mer, and De Beemster.
