In the federal census for 1900, longshoremen and stevedores are classed under the heading Domestic and Personal Service. It is difficult to imagine any sufficient reason why this work of cargo handling is not classified as a branch of Trade and Transportation. The New York bureau of labor statistics classifies it under Transportation, and this seems to be its proper place.
