After securing sufficient data, the author by chance read to Father David R. Wallace, of Oakland, a short description of My City of Inspiration — San Francisco. It was the original intention of the author to write a series of lectures, and not a history. Father Wallace immediately suggested that she include the Pioneer Negro, and gave her a letter of introduction to a pioneer lady by the name of Mrs. Annie Peters in Oakland. After spending a day in talking over the pioneer history of the State with Mrs. Peters, the author decided to write a history, and has spent five additional years in producing this work.
