Not until 1817, when Dr. Franklin had been dead twenty-seven years, was his Autobiography given to the world in his own lan guage and without abridgment. It was published, then, in the edition of his works edited by his grandson; who had delayed the issue, as it is supposed, from a regard to the interests of his aged father, a pensioner of the English government, who died in 1813.
