Unlike Thando Mgqolonzana's new novel, Hear Me Alone (Jacana Press, 2011) which, in the words of Nadine Gordimer, a fellow South African writer, is a "daring, highly original alternative to the fable of the virgin birth" (see Mail and Guardian, Friday, September 30-October 6, 2011, p.6), the present volume under review is a serious and scholarly investigation of the nativity narratives as found in the synoptic Gospels of Matthew and Luke.
