This impressive volume is the product of an interdisciplinary dialogue between Pauline scholars and scholars of Patristics and/or Early Christian Studies, particularly Tertullian. In the words of Michael F. Bird, one of the respondents in the book, "Reception history is one of the hip things happening in biblical studies at the moment" (16). The book showcases several illuminating studies on how Tertullian and his opponents read and understood Paul in their own, pre-modern context. The book has studies from many accomplished Pauline and Patristic scholars, and all of the articles also have responses, giving the book an enriching dialogical quality. At the outset it must be said that one of the challenges in producing a collection such as this would be to present it in a manner that is helpful and accessible to both NT and Patristics scholars - and this book does accomplish it. More importantly, the study shows how the disciplines of NT and Early Christian Studies are moving closer together. David E. Wilhite provides a helpful introduction to both the project and Tertullian himself, as well as an introduction to the various chapters.
