内容简介

Methods for Exodus is a textbook on biblical methodology. The book introduces readers to six distinct methodologies that aid in the interpretation of the book of Exodus: literary and rhetorical, genre, source and redaction, liberation, feminist, and postcolonial criticisms. Describing each methodology, the volume also explores how the different methods relate to and complement one another. Each chapter includes a summary of the hermeneutical presuppositions of a particular method with a summary of the impact of the method on the interpretation of the book of Exodus. In addition, Exodus 1–2 and 19–20 are used to illustrate the application of each method to specific texts. The book is unique in offering a broad methodological discussion with all illustrations centered on the book of Exodus.

This book is an anthology and thus does not have much of a unifying theme or perspective. However, the perspective is very current and modern. It reviews various methods of criticism which help in our understanding of the text, such as, Form Criticism or Narrative Criticism. It also includes some lenses which the book labels as critical methods, such as, Feminist Criticism or Post-Colonial Criticism. These lenses do not so much help us to understand the text as such, but to interpret it for specific audiences. They may at times also project onto the text modern thoughts. The book helps one to understand Exodus and how modern critical methods apply. At the same time, it does not view the text of Exodus as it was was written and the audience for whom it was written. This book seeks to conform Exodus to modern thought at times, thus cheating Exodus as well as the student of Sacred Scripture.
