It should be no surprise to the readers of Clinical Chemistry that the age of the â-omicâ technologies is upon us. Indeed, one cannot read the scientific or lay literature without repeatedly coming across breathless predictions of the marvelous scientific advances that await us âright around the cornerâ. All of us are undoubtedly familiar with the terms genomics and proteomics; many of those working in the field of laboratory medicine are taking advantage of the technologies and discoveries of these fields and are quite comfortable with advances that are closely related to their own work. However, not all are conversant with the length and breadth of the burgeoning discipline of medical genomics.
