Abstract The quality control of water analysis is currently a major priority in many countries. Only accurate analytical results allow valid conclusions to be drawn about the quality of different types of water and the risks related to human consumption. Quality assurance (QA) for water analysis is, therefore, a major concern for the evaluation of the state of the environment or the quality of, for example, drinking water. However, in many cases the required quality of the analyses is lacking. The quest for quality is a long term process which requires adherence to rules such as the use of QA guidelines, participation in interlaboratory studies, and the use of certified reference materials (CRMs). This review discusses some of these aspects with particular emphasis on water analysis.
