内容简介

III the history of the United States, there are few names more familiar to the reading public, than that of Sitting Bull, whose surrender, ten years ago, attracted, in the United States and Canada, universal attention, and the event was not unnoticed by the nations of the Old World. It having been my good fortune to be chosen by the U. S. Military authorities, to conduct the negotiations for the surrender of the wiley Old Chieftain and his formidable band Of warlike Sioux, it becomes apparent that 1 alone could write a correct history of that event, and hardly a day passes that 1 am not asked why I don't write the matter up for publication. To these questions l would usually reply, that perhaps some day I would, and this publication is made in fulfillment of that promise, and in response to what seemed to me like a public demand. I trust it will be received by the American people in a charitable and kindly spirit. But mine enemies may augh in ghoulish glee, for l have written a book.
