It was the orignal intention to use only a few photographs. Later, it was thought wise to reproduce cuts of some individuals and, what is more important, all scenes which the men of the Regiment retain in sacred memory. The placing of these cuts and the narrative are not in every case consistent, and in this matter we were governed not by our wishes but by the advice of the publisher. The size of the cut depends entirely upon circumstances. Toward the close of the work, in Order to save space, it was found necessary to decrease the size of all cuts. An effort was made to secure cuts of men, who by reason of association with the Regiment deserve a place in the history, but our efforts were not always successful. In order to insure the greatest possible accuracy all matter for this work has been submitted to individuals, whose knowledge of the facts was the most trustworthy. It was urged that a protest against the attitude of the Army to the National Guard should find a place in this volume. While no exhaustive comment on this controversy has been attempted we have published the facts as they appeared to us and, with reference to Army officers assigned to the Regiment, we have lodged blame where it was deserved and-bestowed praise where it was merited.
