This work is issued in continuation of the series of handbooks written by the Author, viz., the works' manager's handbook, and the practical engineer's handbook, which are much appreciated by engineers for the practical nature of their information. It is, therefore, written in the same style as the works which it is intended to supplement. In the present volume, the Author has endeavoured to present in a concise, condensed, and readily accessible form, the latest and most useful information on steam boilers, comprising the results of numerous investigations and researches in this particular branch of engineering. Much useful information is given on heat combustion the composition, calorific power, and evaporative power, of fuels; chimneys for steam-boilers; evaporation; the properties of steam and the transmission of heat.
