The' authorities of the University Library, as well as those of the Royal Library, of Munich, have invariably been ready to proffer their valuable books for the purpose of this work. More particularly, however, is the author indebted to the managers of the library of the British Museum, and, most particularly, to Dr. Richard Garnett, who was Keeper of the Books at the time when the original quarto-text of The Misfortunes of Arthur was transcribed, by their generous permission, for the present edition. Not only as grateful, but as very fortunate, does the editor wish to express himself to the Duke of Devonshire for graciously lending, for collation, his rare and precious copy, which, next to the text in the British Museum, is the only quarto known to be in existence.
