With regard to the use of canoes by the Foxes, it is repeatedly stated by the early teachers and missionaries that they did not know their use — Wis. Hist. Coils, xvi, pp. '56, 257, 374; N. Y. Colon. Docs, ix, p. 160. Later, however, they appear to have learned to em ploy them from their Winnebago and Potawatomi neighbors; see Wis. Hist. Bells, xvi, p. 311; xvii, p. 33.
