One caution, however, is necessary when it is being used as a basis for conversational exercises. The nature of the stories (folk-tales) requires the employment of bu and ibr as pronouns of address, instead of the more formal @ie, in most cases the only form permissible to the English student in intercourse With Germans. The teacher will therefore practise his pupils in substituting @ie, with the requisite change in the verbal form, for bu and ibr of the text, as often as these occur in the phrases to be committed to memory. In the notes and translations simplicity and utility have been kept constantly in view; and, in order to fix in the mind points of grammar and idiom, cross references to the text and notes are very frequent.
