In presenting this second volume of my Perceval Studies to my readers I feel that a few words of explanation as to the quite unexpected development of the subject are necessary. When I formed the project of editing the Modena Perceval it was with the underlying impression that, though the publication of the text was necessary in the interests of the criticism of the Perceval literature, yet that it was unlikely to furnish material for either a long or particularly interesting study. It is always the unexpected that happens: before I had been long at work I recognised that we had here most important evidence as to the nature of the sources utilised, evidence which threw an entirely new light on the question of the Borron authorship.
