The tract of country to which this little volume is devoted is not so well known as it should be, being generally regarded as a mere camping-ground for hunters and sportsmen, and an occasional artist in search of the wild and the picturesque, when, in fact, it possesses great capacities for mercantile and manufacturing enterprise, as well as vast mineral and forest wealth. To give some idea, however imper fect, of what it really is, and to indicate, however briefly, what it is destined to become, is the object of the present writer, who has spared neither time nor labor to insure his volume the accuracy which he believes it to possess.
