By way of special provision for the geological service of the expedition, and with a View to amassing a palaeontological collection, I secured the assistance of a young and energetic geologist, not to be daunted by difficulties in the ground to be surmounted. Prof. Steinmann, of Freiburg, Baden, was good enough to recommend to me one of his pupils and assistants, the young geologist Herr Hans Keidel, who on my invita tion joined the expedition. With the trusty support of such assistants I might hope to obtain some data of value in the service of science.
