The following pages are an elaboration of the author's diary containing the record of visits to Morocco in each of the years 1882 - 1885. The journey which forms the principal subject of the volume was taken in 1883. In this journey we do not claim to have entered on any absolutely new ground, though in many places we quitted the ordinary caravan routes to the interior. Dr. Gerhard Rohlfs, who travelled wearing the garb, and professing the faith, of a Mussulman, no doubt preceded us not only at Wazan, but also along the road thence to Fez; to the best of our belief, however, we were the first Europeans to follow in his footsteps along that road. With reference to the title of the book, it may be mentioned that El Maghreb is the short Arabic name for Morocco.
