In this, the third volume of the Indian Captivities Series, the publishers have profited by a number of valuable suggestions and criticisms in the endeavour to improve upon the preceding volumes of the series, which have both been accorded much praise alike by individuals and by the press. As in the preceding volumes, the aim has been to preserve as nearly as possible the exact wording of the author, according to the best edition obtainable. To this end, while the book has been carefully edited, with a number of additional explanatory notes, the old-fashioned spellings and phraseology, as well as many word-forms now obsolete or archaic, have been left unaltered, only palpable typographical and other minor errors being corrected.
