For some years I have been urged to compile a few reminiscences of Goodwood; but, although feeling that it would be a great pleasure to record the many interesting incidents concerning which I might claim to be an authority, my impaired health and advanced age precluded me from undertaking the task until last year, when I felt more equal to the effort.During the period I was upon the Goodwood estate, extending over a great number of years, I had exceptional opportunities for observing much, which few now living can have seen; and as, moreover, I possessed many works containing incidents relative to subjects associated with the family and estate, in addition to my personal experience, I was encouraged to comply with the request.I may not have done justice to the subjects dealt with, but it has been more than a labour of love to write what I have, and I trust these reminiscences may be found interesting to those who may do me the honour of reading my book.
