Like the northern boundaries of New York, New France, and the St. Lawrence and Sorel rivers, the territory with which this volume concerns itself was the storm centre of many a conflict, that deluged with blood the shores of Lake Champlain and Lake George. Backward and forward for centuries, per haps, the Aborigines had fought along the shores of these lakes, their fierce enmity ceasing not, until the feebler enemy was exterminated.
