The preparation of a volume which should tell briefly and simply the story of Colonel Higginson's life, and as nearly as possible in his own words, has involved examining and sifting a great mass of manuscripts. Happily he shared with his contemporaries a reluctance, not felt by the present generation, to destroy letters, journals, or memoranda.
