The illustrations for this edition of Seeing and Knowing have been chosen by the editors. The author's indications for many of the earlier paintings and sculptures have been followed. In addition, a number of contemporary works are included to represent the kind of art which Berenson attacks. Some of these are already recognized as modern classics; others are provocative works created in the twenty years since this essay was written, which go still farther in rejecting the classical convention.
