The sepoy rebellion brought with it the political extinction of the East India Company. The whole Indian administration was transferred to the Crown by the abolition of the double government vested in the Board of Control and the Court of Directors. On September 1st, 1858, the political functions of the Directors ceased, but the Company still existed for the management of their East India Stock, all other property being vested in the Crown for the purposes of the government of India.
