A course of lectures, delivered at Brighton by the late Dr. Mantell, on the Geology and Fossils of the South-east of England, formed the ground-work of the present work, so many editions of which have been favourably received by the public during the last twenty years. The great advancement of geology and the collateral sciences, during the last ten years, has necessitated considerable modifications in several chapters of the present edition, so that the most important recent discoveries in palaeontology, and the new or modified views of geological phenomena resulting from the progress of knowledge, might be incorporated in the respective Lectures. The Editor has carefully adhered to the Author's praiseworthy plan of giving full references to the sources of published facts and opinions,—both for the sake of justice to previous observers, and to enable the student to work out for himself the subject-matter in hand.
