At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Stim mel was a student in the public schools of Co lumbus, Ohio, after which he entered the Ohio Wesleyan University. In 1 863 he was honored by being selected as one of a Company of one hundred men, to be known as the Lincoln Body guard, with headquarters near the White House in Washington. This brought Sergeant Stimmel in almost daily observation of the President, and furnished an opportunity for a study of Lincoln that fell to the lot of but few.
