N 1915 the writer was appointed lecturer on the Baird Foundation. In normal circum stances the lectures would have been given in 1917, but owing to the war their delivery was postponed for a year. This volume contains the lectures as they were read in Glasgow in January and February 1918. They include, however, a considerable amount of matter which had to be omitted then owing to limitations of time.
