This book is intended as a hand-book for teachers and as a help for students. Its purpose is to aid in the comprehension and understanding, and therefore in the appreciation, of literature through the poems here presented. With two or three exceptions, these poems are taken from various standard School Readers, and most of them are recognized as being among the great short poems of English and American literature. Not all of them, however, are found in any one set of Readers; and it is hoped that the book may be found suitable for use as a supplementary Reader with any of the standard series.
