The sentences designated for oral translation are made as short as the subject permits, in the hope that the pupil may be encouraged to think and talk without com mitting himself always to writing. At frequent intervals lessons of connected passages occur, reviewing both the subject-matter of the preceding oral exercises and the points of syntax which they cover. It is understood, however, that many teachers will prefer to treat all the exercises as written work; in such cases the lessons of connected discourse will be found valuable as weekly review exercises.
