----- 西格地的研究概况:从时间的角度来看
Next to datable inscriptions, there is, perhaps, no relic of Roman occupa tion which yields such valuable chronological evidence as Term Sigillata the red-glazed fabric of Gaul and other provinces — commonly known as Samian ware. The variations and transmutations of its forms, the changing character of its decorative designs in successive periods, and the marks of its potters, tell a chronological tale almost, if not quite, as convincing as the transitions of the column and arch in architecture.
