It is the purpose of this investigation to trace and to interpret the semantic history of the words for the emotions in some of the Indo European languages, and to establish a comprehensive classification of their sources and their shifts in meaning. I believe that, except for certain difficulties mentioned on page 9, the intention has been realized. At any rate, the wider heads marked by capital letters (a-g) and by Roman numerals will accommodate any more specific developments that may have failed to appear in the material to which I have limited myself. So words with an earlier meaning 'smile' for which I have, contrary to expectation, not succeeded in establishing a development to 'be pleased, or so' will readily fall into group B. V, and so forth.
