His little book has been written in the belief that there exist today an urgent need and a demand for some more specific and more satisfactory information to guide the teachers and pupils of secondary schools in their study of Latin verse. It is the author's hope that this need will be found to have been met, in part at least, by the contents of the following pages. For an aroused interest in this subject and for the general theory herein presented, he is indebted to Professor William Gardner Hale of the University Of Chicago. Several years' practical application of this theory, while teaching classes in the Indiana University, has served to strengthen the author's belief in its correctness and its absolute feasibility.
