It has not been my purpose to compile a dictionary of sculptors， but I have included in the book a considerable number of names， believing that the usefulness of the book would be thereby increased， though I am quite aware that some of the names I have omitted， especially in the chap ters on modern sculpture， may be no less important than some of those that I have mentioned. A choice had to be made， and I have chosen as best I could.
