The aim of this series, Makers of tbe Nineteentb Century, of which Sir Edward Cook's Delane of 755 Times is the first volume to appear, is to interpret the age which immediately preceded ours through the lives of those who had the chief influence upon it. It is always difficult to set arbitrary limits to an age, but for practical purposes the period chosen for this series is roughly from the year 18 30, when the work of the French Revolution was almost accom plished, till the death of Queen Victoria in 1902. Our ambition is to embrace in the series the lives of all those eminent men and women whose chief work was performed during those seventy years.
