IN this new edition of my Don Quixote the whole plan of the work has been altered and rearranged, in accordance with the new order of publication and the more popular form which it has taken. The text of the translation has been revised and amended throughout, and while nothing has been omitted, some errors have been corrected. The notes, while shortened and simplified, have been considerably increased in number. Some few have not been reproduced from the larger edition of 1888, which was intended for a limited circle of students and lovers of Cervantes, as not being of interest to general readers. In addition to the other subjects more largely treated of in the Appendices, there are now added a chapter on the Spanish Ballads and an Itinerary, illustrated with a sketch map, showing the tracks of Don Quixote in his three sallies. The Index, which I have been the first of the translators to give, has been revised and enlarged. The four volumes of the text of Don Quixote will be supplemented by a new and greatly enlarged, Biography of Cervantes, which will contain in the Appendix a complete Bibliography of all his works, together with the translations in all languages.
