内容简介

The text-books of the National Drawing Course are intended particularly for public school teachers but this book is written, not only for public school teachers, but for all art students and others interested in art education. It supplements the first book of the series free-hand Drawing and shows how the methods explained in it may be applied in the study of light and shade.

The author's preface to this book is dated October 12, 1896 - in other words the present edition is a re-issue of a book that is over 110 years old! What a wonderful opportunity to learn about art in the pre-computer drawing age and how artists were taught to think about light and shade and the effects on objects. It is a book that doesn't require reading from front to back to get something useful for drawing or painting today. In that pre-television and computer game age, afternoons and evenings might be devoted to art as a pastime instead. Today's great artists like David Hockney are quite capable of drawing highly naturalistically as well as moving on to more abstraction tat coming from understanding fundamental forms and light and shadow. A very worthwhile reference source.

“Light and Shade” by Anson K. Cross This old (and somewhat “behind times”) book does contain useful drawing/art information. But it was aimed most at people who planned to teach Art in British schools, circa early 1900s. The same information, and much more, can be found in dozens of modern day art books.

I found this book to be extremely educational. Having had no formal teaching of how to draw , I found it easy to follow. Since having read the book I have made use of the knowledge gathered from Lights and Shades.

William Quesada Vargas

Bob O'Melia

Good guide if you practice, practice, it

To wordy and did not hold my interest . It did not have enough examples of the artist work to help me understand how the process was to be completed.

A thoughtful treatise taking into account historical art to today and addressing the challenges for the 'where to from here' or as I see it the next step/evolution of art. Interesting, thought provoking and informative.
