In deference to considerations of paper restrictions, arguments have been abbreviated, and a considerable amount of statistical illustration has been deleted but what remains may be regarded as an accurate version. The vital significance of the state of affairs in the world of labour depends upon the truth or falseness of the assertion, categorically put forth, that the people of this country are distrustful both of the future and of the men given the task of shaping that future. If such be so, the speeches here republished may serve to remove, at least to modify, that distrust. It is with that end in view that this volume has been prepared.
