When Greek history begins, Egypt was on the verge of its decline. Even in the days of Abra ham, the Pyramids had been built and copper mines worked on Mount Sinai; and as, according to the Jewish tradition, he led his herds to drink in the Nile, he must have seen many Of the monu ments whose ruins now tell of the advanced state of Egyptian art at that time. Moses, we are told, Was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and though we have no history Of those times in books, their history was written in hieroglyphics, on temples and Obelisks, long before the Greek alphabet was known.
