In all the experiments I have endeavoured to pay heed to the exigencies of teaching practical chemistry to classes of students, and to students who have not very much time to devote to the study. The book ought to be used in connection with Lectures and Demonstrations. The first section follows pretty closely the order in which I have attempted, for some years, to develop the subject-matter of elementary chemistry in my own lectures. All the experiments described in this Part have been tried repeatedly in the laboratory. By the kindness of the Publishers I have been allowed to use the proof-sheets in the laboratory before making the final corrections. I can, therefore, affirm that the experiments are workable.
