It will be taken for granted, it is hoped, that this account of British expansion is not intended as an exhaustive study, but as an introduction to a part of modern history that has received altogether too little emphasis in the past in Ameri can schools and colleges. In accordance with this purpose, bibliographies have been appended to the chapters. They refer, it is believed, to the best selection of available books for further reading, although they do not pretend to include all the important works on British imperial growth. Biblio graphical data have been added in order that the titles may be more than names, and may lead to an acquaintance with the volumes themselves.
