Hidalgo), in the fortified town of St Sebastian, received the disagreeable intelligence from a nurse, that his wife had just presented him with a daughter. No present that the poor misjudging lady could possibly have made him was so entirely useless towards any purpose of his. He had three daughters already; which happened to be more by 2-1-1, according to his reckoning, than any reasonable.

For those who love Kant, this book is a treasure. Not only is it a reproduction of an older printing with lovely old font, but it has a tender narrative that gives one a feel for the man utterly apart from his philosophical work. It is a diversion, then, and does nothing to help you understand Kant's work. But if you have become immersed in his work, then taking this detour into his day-to-day living will be a pleasure. I haven't bothered with the other essays yet and may never get to them. This one is priceless. I learned of from Gavin Bryars' lovely piece, "The Old Tower of Lobenicht" as he wrote the music based on an episode in the "Last Days" essay. Th music does get the feel of the last days.....

The story of the death of this great philosopher should be in the library of all who lean to the study of philosophy.
