The lectures which form the basis of the present volume were first prepared, and delivered before the Senior Class of the Boston University School of Medi cine, in the winter of1879 — 80. They were revised and again delivered at the session of 1880 — 81. Frequent inquiries were made by the students and others for the best work on insanity, one' giving at the same time a knowledge of homopathictherapeutics, but I was obliged to answer that, with the exception of Jahr's Mental Diseases, we had no treatise upon that subject; hence the attempt to supply the want by the publica tion of these lectures, imperfect as they are. Additions and changes have been made, and the book is now given, not as a complete text-book, but as containing a fairly correct summary of our present knowledge of insanity and its homopathic treatment.
