By particular request and with some reluctance (because my convictions clash with my sentiments) I have added to this series of short lectures a few words about the problem which chiefly exercises men's minds in relation to the formation of new boundaries or the restoration of old ones — the problem of alsace-lorraine. This forms no part of the lecture series. In a few cases I have introduced historical references, but it is only in those instances where the geographical position or configuration of a country has so obviously shaped its history as to furnish an example in support of my theories about boundaries.
