内容简介

The first three chapters form an introductory course in which the fundamental ideas of the calculus are introduced, including derivative, differential, and the definite integral, but the formal work is restricted to that involving only the poly nomial. These chapters alone are well fitted for a short course of about a term. The definition of the derivative is obtained through the concept of speed, using familiar illustrations, and the idea of a derivative as measuring the rate of change of related quantities is emphasized. The slope of a curve is introduced later. This is designed to prevent the student from acquiring the notion that the derivative is fundamentally a geometric concept. For the same reason, problems from mechanics are prominent throughout the book. With Chapter IV a more formal development of the subject begins, and certain portions of analytic geometry are introduced as needed. These include, among other things, the straight line, the conic sections, the cycloid, and polar coordinates. The book contains a large number of well-graded exercises for the student. Drill exercises are placed at the end of most sec tions, and a miscellaneous set of exercises, for review or further work, is found at the end of each chapter except the first.
