内容简介

This text was written as an attempt to consolidate knowledge and experience in the ever-expanding field of noninvasive vascular imaging, with a focus on peripheral angiography. The book is directed toward the general clinician, as well as the cardiovascular specialist, and aims to summarize the principles behind computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) angiography and provide practical advice and basic pathologic findings. The primary editors, Drs Mukherjee and Rajagopalan, specialize in cardiology and radiology, respectively. The book is organized into two major sections dedicated to CT angiography and MR angiography. The CT section begins with fundamentals of CT scanning, followed by chapters on image reconstruction, radiation dosimetry, image postprocessing, and contrast agents. Following these basic principles, the editors discuss, chapter by chapter, application of CT angiography to the various parts of vascular anatomy. The second section, dedicated to MR angiography, also begins with fundamental principles of MR imaging, followed by specific techniques used in vascular imaging and a description of contrast agents. Each subsequent chapter is dedicated to specific vascular anatomy, with a final chapter on MR venography. The individual chapters are well organized, with introduction and conclusion paragraphs. In the site-specific chapters, anatomic considerations are addressed, including variant anatomy, followed by a discussion on specific protocols, clinical applications, pathologic findings, and artifacts. Many of the chapters conclude with a practical “pearls” section, which offers the contributing author’s own insight and experience. The organization of the book is well thought out. Each chapter logically flows into the next, and topics are covered thoroughly yet concisely. The figures are simple and easy to follow, with short captions. The tables are highlighted in blue and are easy to pick out when a quick reference is needed. Some of the CT images are dark, but this may be by design to bring out the opacified vessels. In general, the images are of high quality with good contrast. In particular, the book presents color volume-rendered images well. The editors also do a good job of discussing differences in protocols and techniques for performing these studies with equipment from different manufacturers. One small weakness is the brief discussion on contrast agent toxicity, particularly with MR imaging. Given that many of these studies are performed in patients with vascular disease and coexisting renal dysfunction, risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is often an issue. Although still a controversial topic, a more in-depth discussion of relative risks and the options available to both the referring physician and the physician performing the study would be helpful. In summary, the book successfully meets the goal of thoroughly and succinctly covering the topic of CT and MR angiography of the peripheral circulation. The cost is more than that of many of the other books on the market; however, most of those books cover CT or MR, not both. Some members of the target audience may find the physics and technical portions of the book a bit too in depth. However, for the clinician who wishes to implement noninvasive RVIEW S ND OM M ETARY BOOK RVIEW S Book Reviews
