This book is already the gold standard on the evolution of the American residency system. Ludmerer has outdone himself with this capstone volume of his 3 volume history of American medical education. It should be must reading for every 4th year medical student. Jonathon Erlen, Ph.D. History of Medicine University of Pittsburgh

Kenneth Ludmerer is the master medical historian of our age and he has once again demonstrated that this title is justified. He understands the nuances of the changing context of medical practice, how it influences the formation of young physicians, and simultaneously articulates both the complexities of modern medicine and that values are a more powerful and needed guide now than ever. His writing style is elegant, understandable, and true. All in healthcare can benefit from reading this book.

Dr. Ludmerer's review describes how the "Great Age" of medical education and medicine was created and defended through the Twentieth Century. It's inspiring and nostalgic. Glad that he left out the disastrous last 10 years of EMR's, work hours, testing, electric student and resident assessments, demise of "Continuity Clinics", 15 minute "primary care" office visits, prior approvals, and dominance of scientists and administrators. Could still do it. Let Me Out.

For someone who is intimately connected to the medical profession the history of it's process through the years is extremely interesting. Extremely easy reading for the average person, not a book of medical jargon.

Medical residents should read this whole series--looking for a graduation gift for a medical student entering residency? This is a great option. House of God is an obvious staple but for the avid reader, I'd place this high on your to read list!

Excellent, comprehensive account of GME both yesterday and today. A must read for any educator interacting with residents. Well done.
