It's not a bad book, but for what it costs, it should be a little more in depth, and/or updated. I couldn't find a cheap used copy, so I paid the full sticker and I'm feeling a little buyers remorse on this one. Upsides : - Good introductory/overview of many concepts - Block diagrams and text work well together - Clearly written Downsides : - Many of the ICs discussed are no longer in production; a quick search on mouser will show how many are no longer on the market - Obviously written before datasheets were readily accessible on manufacturers web pages : many of the circuits are just copies of manufacturer provided examples that can be pulled from free application notes or the datasheets of the IC's themselves - Consequently, there are no in depth design notes and very few formulas for those who actually want to do something beyond the examples - Really expensive for what it is - Typical Newnes recycling of material. If you own other Newnes books on audio or written by R.M. Marston, you probably already have a good deal of the material contained in this book

As a guitarist AND an electronics hobbyist, this book comes in handy in designing effects circuits. Marston goes into designing with CCD chips and dual clock timers. Excellent for analog modulation and time-based effects. If you're into the hifi world, you'll probably enjoy the amplifier circuits. They're not much use to me since I need non-linear amps for my guitar. He does go into a couple of non-linear circuits that could be used for a practice amp, but most of the amp circuits are linear.
